RELEVANT INFORMATION ABOUT SMARTWATCH

Although it is a secondary feature in this type of watches, they all integrate with our mobile phone to warn us of calls or messages, as well as to store data related to our training through connectivity and a dedicated app of the manufacturer.

Thanks to their size and integrated GPS, these clocks work autonomously, so you can use and monitor training only using this device, without using the phone.

However, a good application and frequent updates can improve the user experience, either by providing more information, doing so more clearly and graphically or by integrating other apps such as music streaming, to listen to music while we train.

You’ve just bought an smartwatch and after synchronizing it with your mobile phone to receive calls and notifications, it’s time to go one step further. What applications are worth installing?

First we must install the obvious apps, such as the ones we will use to communicate: Gmail for e-mail or Telegram and WhatsApp to continue receiving messages at all times.

Spotify to take our favorite music or Shazam also have their versions for wearables. There are other applications that we could consider basic and you are already taking time to install them: Google Keep to save notes, calculator, calendars or weather forecast, like InstaWeather.

Among the watches with GPS for sport, we distinguish those that are multisports, covering typical sports such as running or cycling, with others more specific, for example for the practice of golf or triathlon.

For reasons of extension, we will confine ourselves to those of general interest, because in reality the variations are not many. In fact, within the same model we can find variants for different types of sport.

For example, triathlon, where the main difference is that they integrate a multisport mode that allows jumping from one sport to another in full competition. They also include elements to measure height, are resistant to open water and maps.
Water resistance

Considering their exposure to sweat and inclement weather, it is normal for most GPS watches to be water resistant, but not with the same degree of resistance. However, there are still some models focused on running with limited resistance.

With most we will be able to get into a pool and swim, but there are specific models that support deeper diving and open water activities.

While some models specify at what depth they can dive in meters, others use atmospheres as is usually done with traditional watches:

  • 5 Atm. It supports splashes, rain or snow, swimming, diving, snorkeling. Unsuitable for scuba diving and high speed water sports.
  • 50 Atm. Supports splashing, rain or snow, swimming, diving, snorkeling and high speed water sports. Unsuitable for scuba diving.
  • With EN13319 standard (for diving): Supports splashing, rain or snow, swimming, diving, snorkeling and high speed water sports and scuba diving.

If we do sport frequently and at great intensity, the usual thing is to want to know how our body behaves with training, especially our heart. To begin with, controlling the heart rate helps us to know the sports intensity that we can support and with this data, see the evolution.

When we exercise, our muscles will require a greater supply of oxygen from the heart than when we are at rest and this as a consequence will work faster to a limit. The more exercise we do, the more we reduce our heart rate at rest, something that improves our overall health but also allows us to increase our sports capacity, again up to some limits that will depend on our physical condition, age or genetics.

In GPS watches we will find models with an integrated heart rate monitor on the wrist or the option to connect via Bluetooth with a chest band that measures our heart rate (HR) more accurately.

In addition, some GPS clocks show other heart data such as our maximum heart rate (HR Max or FCM) during activity and based on this, establish training zones. The more accurate the maximum heart rate is, the better it predicts your training zones and therefore, the more effective your workouts are.

The Global Positioning System or GPS is capable of determining the position of an object on Earth with an accuracy that can range from centimeters to hundreds of meters away. This system works thanks to a set of satellites positioned all over the globe and uses trilateration: three satellites locate the latitude and longitude of the device and a precise fourth the altitude.

The GPS in a clock allows us to know with an accuracy of around 1 to 3% what distance we have traveled and where we have made the route**, yes, provided we are outdoors. However, obstacles such as trees, cloudy days or tall buildings affect positioning.

To deal with this problem, some manufacturers incorporate alternatives such as pedometers for steps and cadence sensors for both cycling and racing, elements that can work both as a replacement for GPS indoors and as a complement outdoors.

However, in some locations such as dense forests or high mountains, GPS may not be available. That’s when you’ll appreciate that your watch also has GLONASS, the geolocation system created by the USSR (Global’naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya System) which has 31 satellites in orbit. If the GPS fails, with the GLONASS will be able to provide our location.

Another sensor that we find in absolutely all the clocks with GPS are the accelerometers, those instruments included in smartphones and werarables capable of trackear the activity and to calculate distances or rhythms of race during the 24 hours or in interiors, places in which the GPS does not serve to calculate the distance.

It’s one of the most important parameters. If we want our watch to measure how our training is doing, we need it to be able to measure it from beginning to end. Thus, if we are preparing a marathon or make an excursion in the mountains, the minimum is that its autonomy covers those hours of activity.

Manufacturers provide an autonomy guidance that could differ from the actual use we give, however we must always pay attention to the autonomy with the GPS in use, which will be much smaller. Bearing in mind that the autonomy provided is an approximation, it is key to opt for popular models of reference brands, so that we can count on the reference of previous models and feedback from other users in similar trainings.

You will be able to find some very basic ones with which you can only access the notifications of your phone, without the possibility of answering, and others that are almost like carrying your smartphone on your wrist.

You can go out without your mobile and make/receive calls, SMS, whatsapp, etc. They actually behave like mobiles and in fact some use the same Android operating system as for the smartphone and not the Android Wear developed for smartwatch. What can a smartwatch do?

Each brand manufacturer offers different smartwatch functionalities in each of its models. But there are some basics that are common to most smart watches, regardless of brand or price range.

Watch functions
Although a watch is intelligent, it does not fail to provide the basic functionalities of the watch. Giving the time or having a stopwatch is the basics. Practically all of them also offer an agenda and calendar function.

Pedometer
One of the most common and basic smartwatch functions is to measure the steps that the user takes, either throughout the day, or within a certain time frame. This type of intelligent watches are widely used as an aid and control for the health care and fitness of the user. In this context, knowing the mobility of the same by specifying the steps taken throughout the day, is a very interesting functionality.

Timer
It is one of the basic smartwatch functions that you can get the most out of in different areas. For example, during a training session, to measure the time you want to devote to each specific type of exercise. If you are cooking, to let you know after the time you have indicated that you have to turn off the fire or take your recipe out of the oven. For students and opponents, to mark the minutes dedicated to each subject or to the break between study sessions.

Alarm and alarm clock
These are very basic smartwatch functions, but very useful. Who doesn’t like them? And it’s more convenient to use them with a smart watch you wear on your wristband. You can listen and turn off instantly with your smartphone.

Make and receive hands-free calls
Being able to make and receive calls without taking your smartphone out of your purse or pocket is very convenient in many situations. Only by touching your smart watch will you be able to communicate while driving, working, cooking or whatever you want. It is one of the most widely used smartwach functions. The truth is that it is not surprising, because it is very practical.

Playing music
Virtually all smartwatch models are capable of playing music with higher or lower sound quality. They can also be used as a remote to control the music on your smartphone. For example, if you carry the latter in your bag or backpack and listen to the music it plays with headphones, you can comfortably control controls such as sound from your wrist.

Reply to emails and messages on social networks
It is a very practical smartwatch function. From your wrist you can do it very quickly when you do not have your smartphone at hand. In an instant you will have given an answer comfortably.

Camera and video functions
Taking photos and video recordings is possible with most smartwatches on the market. This is very convenient because how many times have you seen something and wanted to have your smartphone more at hand to be able to photograph or record it? With a smartphone, all you have to do is lift your wrist and use your finger to instantly take the desired picture or start recording the video of the moment you want to immortalize.

How to connect smartwatch to android phone?

Synchronizing a smartwatch with an Android device is usually quite simple and is done automatically. For devices with Wear OS (formerly called Android Wear) we must download in our smartphone this application, available in Google Play. Wear OS is just the operating system for smartwaches, with the ability to integrate them with any smartphone, tablet or smart TV.

Once launched the application on the smartphone accept the terms of use and activate bluetooth. If our smartwatch has enough battery we must slide the finger on the screen to enter in “search” mode. Once found by the phone we will select in clock and will proceed to the linkage.

In this step the smartwatch will send a verification code to the smartphone and then we will accept in both devices. These will be linked and the clock may need to be updated. Wait a bit until this happens and the smartwatch shows “Synchronizing…”. Now from the application in the phone we will continue with the configuration.

How to connect smartwatch to iphone?

Step 1
After installation, restart your Android Wear smartwatch and you’ll see that the Aerlink application immediately appears on the clock among the compatible apps on the device. If you open the same application on your Android terminal, you will see the need to activate the “iOS Services” option.

Once this option is activated, we move to the iPhone.

Step 2
Already on the iPhone we must run the BLE Utility app. Activate the Bluetooth of the phone and move to the option “Peripheral”, the second icon in the lower zone.

As soon as you access it, you will see a card on your android Wear watch indicating that it is ready to pair your iPhone with the Android Wear smartwatch. Click on the card to start the connection between devices.

Step 3
It’s time to link your iPhone to the Android clock. After the search and location, a 6-digit code will appear in the smartwatch that we must enter in the corresponding field of the Ble Utility application on iPhone. Once this is done both devices will be linked and you can receive iPhone notifications on your smartwatch with Android Wear.

One of the great advantages of this system is that you do not need to have activated bluetooth or carry your Android terminal, as once the process is finished the iPhone and smartwatch will act independently.

Unfortunately, these applications only allow you to consult the notifications, and you will not be able to answer from the clock. However, you can also check the battery status of the iPhone (which, by the way, is consumed alarmingly with this process) and even control the music player of the Apple phone from the smartwatch.
